But it’s not safe to take Valtrex if you have a heart condition or if you’re taking a diuretic. In fact, there’s no FDA-approved alternative for this condition. That means taking Valtrex won’t be a safe choice for you. The FDA has put forth some of the same considerations to you as you should.
“There are concerns about the safety of Valtrex,” said Tadarida Aron of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. “I’m concerned that they don’t have FDA approval of Valtrex and that’s something they have to be taking.”
This is especially important when considering the FDA’s review of a drug that might interact with other medications. Aron and other researchers were surprised when they found that taking Valtrex didn’t increase the chance of kidney problems or blood clots that could lead to heart attacks or strokes.
Valtrex was one of many drug combinations used to treat kidney disease, but it’s not clear exactly how much of the drug that may interact with Valtrex.
But even if you do have kidney problems, your doctor can tell you whether you should take Valtrex or another drug.
“There are concerns that you’ll need to have to take Valtrex or another drug,” said Aron. “That’s not a recommendation.”
In some cases, Aron said, they may recommend an alternative to Valtrex, such as a generic drug called Zoloft.
However, Aron said, he is not aware of any other studies that have found that Valtrex has a high chance of causing kidney problems. The FDA is not allowed to say whether Valtrex is safe for you to take, but Aron said he doesn’t think it’s necessary to take Valtrex with other drugs that can interact with it.

The FDA says that if you don’t take Valtrex, you can take other medications, such as lithium and rizatriptan, that could interact with Valtrex. And you can take a diuretic that doesn’t contain Valtrex.
“It’s important to consider that there’s no reason to take it when you don’t want to,” said Aron. “There’s no reason to take Valtrex if you do not need to.
